If you’ve ever been in a hospital, nursing home, rehabilitation facility or even a doctor’s office, you can see plainly when a person takes pride in their job. You can almost feel it. It’s too bad that it may come as a surprise to see this, because the norm tends to be mediocrity. When a basketball player is introduced at the beginning of a game, his or her fans encourage/cheer for them. The same is true in other sports. These athletes are heroes to some. The same could be said for nurses, doctors, physical therapists and yes, even caregivers. Whether it’s a family member, an acquaintance or healthcare industry personnel, each takes pride in what they do; all for different reasons, of course. Encourage the next person you come into contact with. If they are doing a fantastic job, in your opinion, or not so fantastic; encouragement/cheering goes a long way. The person may thank you right on the spot or they may be too busy to fully acknowledge what you are saying at the time. However, later, they may really think about it and be encouraged, thus taking more continued or renewed pride in the job that they love to do every day, which ultimately is to positively impact another life. Wouldn’t it be awesome if you received applause and cheering when you walked onto your job daily?
Oftentimes, we go along the road of life happily. Everything is going just fine. However, it is nice to know help is there when you need it. We don’t need a tow truck until our vehicle stops. We don’t need a new tire very often, most times, until we have a flat. We don’t need the dentist, but typically twice a year, unless we start having issues with tooth ache. So, you get my point. Until we need help, we do not need it or even think about it. We go along with our lives, until a situation occurs. Help can come in many forms. If you recognize that you can’t do it all by yourself and you need a little help, it’s really okay. That’s called being human! We just have to reach out a little. Do some asking around or research and help is available. It’s nice to know that reliable help is there when you need it.
When we manage the day, we can feel accomplished. Sure, we have a laundry list of important meetings, forms to complete, kids to feed, homes to clean, cars to maintain, and then there’s the upkeep of ourselves. Taking on tasks one day at a time, is more manageable and we can really get things done, without feeling completely stressed out. Start right where you are, with the things you need to do within the next few hours. It’s a way to just “do it”. Once we start, usually we find that it wasn’t so hard after all or even if it was hard, we were “capable” of doing what needed to be done. Start small, then work in a way that makes sense to you. No two people do things exactly alike. Taking ideas from others and tweaking them to fit us, is no crime! Good luck and just start right where you are. You are capable!
We all can share good advice with one another. When flying on an airplane, part of the safety instructions that are usually given, go something like this…”If there should happen to be a drop in cabin pressure, oxygen masks will drop from above. Place your oxygen mask on first and then assist your travel companion or the person next to you.” This principle is also true for caregivers. We must first take care of ourselves, before helping others. We must have the energy, strength, fresh state of mind and assistance to do what is needed on a daily basis.
